Electrical Muscle Stimulation is a special therapeutic  form of electrical current. EMS is applied for the relief of pain,  rehabilitation of injured tissues, and  release of muscle spasm. 

Small amounts of electrical current are introduced into  the tissues. In the same way your body uses electrical nerve impulses to  contract muscles, EMS uses electrical impulses to contract muscles. The  difference is that in EMS, the muscle control comes from a source  outside the body.  

Muscle spasm, which is a partial, involuntary contraction  of a muscle, can occur in reaction to tension, stress, overuse or  injury. Temporarily taking control of the muscle contraction with EMS  makes it harder for the body to maintain a muscle spasm.  

Electrical impulses in EMS are also useful in blocking  pain sensations, and may trigger the release of endorphins in the area  being treated. This widely-used technique safely strengthens muscles,  releases spasm and reduces painful symptoms.

Many patients describe the sensation as a slight tingling and then a relaxation of the muscle tension and related pain.
